Operation FAQ[edit]

Database[edit]

The database has a good list of objects (about 5000). Especially useful is that the catalogue by default shows the ones which should be visible at the current time and place. However, the catalogue doesn't know about any obstacles at your location (houses, trees, etc.) This is one reason why you should set the observable horizon (in the app: Settings -> Visible sky area -> Altitude) to above 30° as there will be many low obstacles. Another reason is that at low altitudes you are looking through more of the atmosphere than when you look higher up and this will compromise your seeing. It would be good for the app to list objects near the object currently being tracked, so if you are looking at a clear patch of sky you can quickly get to see other sights nearby. Otherwise you have to know your way around the constellations. Looking at the ring nebula in Vega, I wanted to see the double double star in Vega. It is very difficult to manually steer the scope across a constellation, so I think the database also needs expanding to include objects like variable stars or indeed the double double star (I didn't find it in the database).
